Ways and Means

The "Farmer's Market" held before the 2009 September meeting was a resounding success. In anticipation of repeating this event on, Wednesday, September 15 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, please save decorative bottles for food items... create appropriate items that could be sold...flowers, fruits, vegetables, canned goods, jams & jellies, breads, herbs, honey, pesto, potpourri, soaps, pickles, relishes, etc
Prepare for this exciting event through the summer months.

Thank you to local garden centers for their help & support: Discounted strawberry jars from County Gardens, plant donations from Sprout Farms & Bush Gardens, and a generous donation of succlents from Mahoney's.

Conservation
The Conservation Committee has introduced a contest "Saving Our Environment" to educate and stimulate an interest in and awareness of what one can do to save our environment and to hopefully instill a life-time change in how we impact our fragile Cape Cod and its resources. To participate, points were determined each month (November, December, February, March & April) .

Perennial Exchange for all Garden Club Members: September 24 (Friday), 11:00 a.m. At Carolyn Lane's garden. Bring a sandwich and enjoy the garden. Drinks will be provided.
The Butterfly Garden at Long Pasture, Mass Audubon
Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, Mass Audubon, 345 Bone Hill Road, Barnstable. From Rt. 6 take exit 7 to Yarmouth Port. Go north one mile on Willow Street, take a left onto Rt. 6A west (at the old Christmas Tree Shop), go one mile and take a right on Bone Hill Road. The sanctuary parking area is 0.2 miles ahead on the left next to the shed.
Maintenance at the garden is the second Wednesday of the month at 9:00 a.m. Call Irene Antkowiak if you have any questions.

Scholarship
Our Garden Club has awarded over $80,000 in scholarship money in the last 23 years.
Scholarships are awarded to Barnstable residents who are graduates of Barnstable High School, Sturgis Charter School and Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich. Seniors and recent graduates attending college may apply. To qualify, students must be planning to major in horticulture, botany, landscape design, conservation, forestry, environmental sciences, and related fields. Applications are available in the guidance offices of those schools.
The Scholarship Awards Recipients for 2010-2011 are:

Under The Green Umbrella
The First Project took place on July 13, 2009 at the Marstons Mills Children's Garden where children created Scarecrows. The Second Project was a Harvest Event in August where children picked vegetables and flowers, filling their baskets to bring home. Thank you to all participating members!

Plans are underway for Garden Club members to help the Master Gardener's Program at the Marstons Mills Children's Garden 2010 beginning May 10 and every Monday thereafter throughout the summer. We'll host specific projects with the children. Sixteen children have already registered. They also happily take children's clothing donations for ages 6-12
Monday, August 30, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Spend some creative time with the children making Corn Husk Dolls. Save your corn husks and gather any bits of materials that can be used to decorate with. Call Priscilla is you'd like to participate or have any knowledge to contribute to this project.

The Barnstable High School Cobb Astro Memorial Garden will host "Tea at a Hidden Jewel" on Monday, September 20, 4:00 p.m. for members to celebrate our gift of a beautiful garden to the Cobb Astro Park and our collaboration with Barnstable High School. (raindate: September 21)

Celebrating the Centennial of Ralph Cahoon's birth with an exhibit of his whimsical Cape paintings, starting July 29. The Garden Club exhibited floral interpretations of his artwork from August 5-8.
