Harvest Event
Creating Baskets of Flowers & Veggies
The Childrens' Gardens-Long Pond Conservation Area
Marstons Mills - August 2009

return to club news

"The Harvest Event" was the second event of our new program "Under The Green Umbrella" Six members of the Osterville Garden Club headed toward the Childrens' Gardens to work with children to create baskets of flowers and veggies. Our cars were loaded with flowers and containers filled with wet oasis and all the other equipment we thought would be needed.

This was a very special day at the gardens. It was their "Annual Open House" when the leaders, Donna & Mary invite parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters and people from the area who have helped support the program to view the gardens and the beautiful results of their effort.

It was also a perfect August day-bright sun, blue sky and puffy white clouds and a very slight breeze. No bugs...only the sound of bees and happy people!

We stood in awe! The flowers were gorgeous, the veggies were at their very best. There was no evidence of the varmints that had plagued our gardens! There were no chipmunks, squirrels or deer...no rotting fruit or dried up plants. Only the kind of beautiful plants as we see in the seed catalogs!" "How come?", we ask Donna. "Because", she said, "this is a special place!"

The children were anxious to get going on filling their baskets so for several hours our Garden Club gang worked with the children.

The results were astonishingly lovely and there were many proud parents to see what their children could create with just a little advice.

The day ended with refreshments, thanks to those attending and a special thank you to the Osterville Garden Club ladies.

It was another great day and a rewarding experience for us to see how happy the children were with their creations and once again to be in the presence of people who love the outdoors, gardening and working with children.
